Nexiq link sourcing. Empty Nexiq link sourcing.

I'm looking for a Nexiq link to connect to a 2003 Freightliner FLD120 12.7 DDDL 6.5 
some have said the cheap $180 Nexiq usb link 1 is all I need, and others say the $650 Nexiq link 2 unit on Amazon is the minimum requirement. IT's only me and my one truck, I'd like to get off cheap. LOL
Any thoughts on the link required?
